It turns out that under the right conditions, you can create a situation in which the selective pressure of the combination of drugs &#8211; which are <em>less effective<\/em> when combined &#8211; can select in favor of the <em>non-resistant<\/em> variant of the bacteria!<\/p>\n<p> Check out Orac&#8217;s post for details; I may also try to get a copy of the paper and post a more detailed look at the math later this week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Orac has posted a really good description of a recent paper discussing how interaction between different antibiotics effects the evolution of antibiotic resistance in bacteria populations.
